Igor * (55) from Kharkiv

I heard the explosions on the morning of February 24. Despair immediately took hold of me. I thought about what I should do. I decided to stay in Kharkiv, and I stayed there for almost three weeks. My cat Jackson, who was always by my side, was a great support and comfort for me.

I heard the explosions on the morning of February 24. Despair immediately took hold of me. I thought about what I should do. I decided to stay in Kharkiv, and I stayed there for almost three weeks. My cat Jackson, who was always by my side, was a great support and comfort for me.

For about ten days, I stayed at home, in my apartment in the Saltivka district, which was fired at by all types of weapons: tanks, Grads, ballistic missiles. I hid in one room, then in another. I tried to spend the night between the load-bearing walls of the building. Later, a friend joined me. Next to his house, the occupiers had dropped a bomb on a disused factory. Then, deciding that one bomb was not enough, they had dropped an additional one on two five-story residential buildings. In one of them, everyone died. The other one, the one my friend lived in, was half-ruined. It was impossible to live there any longer. That’s why he walked 20 km to my place to have at least some shelter.

One day, when a bomb hit the district office and the courthouse not far from my house, my friend, who is quite a brave guy, said that we should go to the bomb shelter. Together we went down to the subway, where we stayed for 10 days. There, I was able to sleep a little, because at home it was simply impossible: constant explosions. You didn’t know where the next one would be. When we were in the subway, a 55-year-old man ran in. He was looking for a young girl, desperate. He described how she was dressed. It was his daughter. The girl had spent almost a month under artillery fire, and then she got fully dressed, took a bag with her, and ran out onto the street under fire. She had gone mad.
