[Vitaly’s story]

I am an artist, founder of the project “Hareleya Neotodresh”, a platform for young artists from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions who I want to make more visible in the Ukrainian and European artworlds.

For me, the war is a real thing that I already experienced and felt in 2014. Explosions, shells flying over my head. What are these wars for? Unfortunately, we live in a world where not everything can be explained by logic.

I wrote the song “Disturbing Dream” 4 hours before the invasion started, because all the news I was seeing was a disturbing dream to me. With the first explosions in the city, I realized that I had to leave. The Russians had lists of activists to be killed, so if I stayed, I would put not only my life at risk, but also the lives of my family members and friends.

Many of my friends stayed in the city. People are so used to explosions that they work in the garden with these sounds. After all, the decision of whether to leave or not is difficult for everyone. If a person does not want to leave, you cannot convince him.

[Yulia’s story]

I live in Severodonetsk, we call it Sever. About two weeks before the beginning of the Russian invasion, the play “Our SEVER”, directed by Dmytro Nekrasov, was performed in our theater. It was literally prophetic.

I still can’t get used to the primal fear that you feel during the bombings. Since 2014, the experience has become familiar: my legs become swollen, my throat tightens, I immediately want to run somewhere and hide.

When I went out in the morning on February 24 and saw people burning documents near the regional court, I realized that I had to leave. I called my mother and told her not to worry, because I was only leaving for a week. But this is already the 52nd day that I have been here. When I left, many people who remained in Severodonetsk reproached me for going to a safe place. I felt guilty. But now, they have also left the city. I can’t say that it makes me feel better, but I feel that I did everything right. I’m not a coward. I just made my decision, and you can’t blame me for that.
