Diana * (42) from Mariupol

What I really want is to get back to Mariupol, to my home with a view of the Drama Theater, which for me personally was a symbol of the city. I always thought that as long as the theater stood, Mariupol would stand. When a bomb was dropped on it on March 16, I realized that I would probably never return, because there would be no place to return to.

Eight years ago, I lost my home in Donetsk, and when I was creating a new one in Mariupol, I did it very consciously, putting my heart and soul into it. I still haven’t overcome this loss.

I constantly want to postpone the moment of deciding “what’s next?”. You need to give yourself some time to remain in no particular place, like a nomad.

On February 22, a large pro-Ukrainian event took place in our city. At the time we felt that everything would be fine, because the whole of Mariupol was yellow and blue.

My husband and I decided to stay in the city as long as possible. We shot videos, I kept a diary. Only when we found ourselves in an information vacuum did it become scary. You didn’t know if the city was surrounded or if there would be help. We lived in this state for three days. Then we decided to take the risk and leave, although other people were afraid. We were lucky. We passed only two Russian checkpoints; they were just setting them up.

After you manage to leave the city, you think that everything will be fine. No. You break through and you know your nightmare has only just begun. You experience survivor’s guilt. Around the clock you think about how to help those who have been left behind. You are overwhelmed by a sense of powerlessness.

I am often told that I am energetic and cheerful. When a black wave surges over me, which happens all the time, I always say to myself: remember your last night in Mariupol, when you would have given anything just to survive. The person who spent three days in dirty clothes in the cold and in the darkness under artillery fire would be ashamed of your present whining self. That’s how I pull myself together.
