[Svitlana’s story]

When the war started in 2014, my husband and I moved from Donetsk to Mariupol. We were dreaming of a new home for us, but now we have been forced to flee the war for the second time.

It was not possible to leave the city, no one would let us out. At the beginning, together with our neighbors we hid from the shelling in the corridor of our nine-story building. On March 11, a shell hit some cars near our house. We had to leave the apartment immediately. We ran over hot glass that melted the soles of our shoes. After that, we hid in the basement of a neighboring house. We slept on the floor in our jackets. We hugged each other to keep warm. We went to other districts in search of a phone signal. Along the road, the torn bodies of people were lying on the ground, no one was picking them up. I really wanted to eat. We cooked on a fire. During the siege, we saw quite a lot of things.

A man who had brain cancer hanged himself because without medicine he could no longer bear the pain. Opposite our house, a man threw himself out of the window: we don’t know if he was afraid or hungry. People couldn’t bear it.

People who offered to drive you out of that hell asked for 1,000 dollars. Where were ordinary people supposed to get so much money from? We couldn’t go on foot either, because we had an old grandmother with us. She was 83 years old and sick. Finally, on March 22, thanks to a friend, we managed to leave for Volodarskyi [the village of Nikolske, 22 km from Mariupol].

We got to Berdiansk. We were stranded in the fields for four days, because the evacuation buses were not being allowed to pass. Finally, we left for Zaporizhzhia. At numerous checkpoints, the Russian military checked the men’s tattoos. Once the Russians ordered all women aged 20 to 45 to leave. They asked about tattoos, whether we had served in the army, and also why we were not going to Rostov. How can you go there, where those who are killing us have come from?!

I don’t know what to do next. I won’t go abroad without my husband, and they won’t let him out.
